Tuesday, Oct 10: Youth Mental Health First Aid Training for CCSI members
FPWA, 40 Broad St (Financial District). Free to attend.
Organized by the Mental Health Association of New York City, this full-day training session will prepare youth workers to support young people who are facing mental health challenges. The event will help attendees to understand the realities of mental health, getting past the stigma that is often attached. It is an interactive course, more practical than theoretical, intended to enhance your skills as well as your knowledge. The training will benefit anyone whose jobs involve working with young people, including health and wellness professionals. Lunch and refreshments will be provided. Those who complete the training will receive a certificate in mental health first aid. More info.
Saturday, Oct 21: The Clean Glow Beauty Wellness Event
Water Street Studio, 247 Water Street (Lower Manhattan). Tickets $35.
This is an event specially targeted to women who have an interest in beauty and wellness but also place importance on nature and the environment, i.e. they want to achieve a clean glow. Attendees will learn about non-toxic alternatives to the popular beauty products and treatments. The event will consist of informative presentations, demonstrations and discussions. It will be a great opportunity for networking with other health and wellness professionals who share the same values, and to get tips on how to be more environmentally friendly in your work and personal life. Thursday, Oct 26: Community Healthcare Network’s 7th Annual Conference on Transgender Health in New York
Parsons The New School for Design, 66 Fifth Avenue (Greenwich Village). Free to attend.
This annual conference addresses the healthcare issues relevant to the transgender community with a keynote speech, a legal clinic and various breakout sessions covering subjects such as policy and preparation for surgery. The overall themes for the day will include endocrine, behavioral health and gender affirming surgery. The event will be an opportunity to find out more about the issues specific to transgender people from experts in this field. It takes place at Parsons, one of New York’s most prestigious and progressive educational institutions. More info.
Friday, Oct 27: 2017 International Mental Health Research Symposium
Kaufman Music Center, 129 West 67th Street (Upper West Side). Free, donations appreciated.
The Brain & Behavior Research Foundation hosts its 29th annual symposium that brings leading scientists from around the world together to discuss the latest research and trends surrounding cognitive neuroscience, including preventing and treating mental illness. In addition to highlighting the research the foundation’s grants have funded, but also feature a keynote from Herbert Pardes, M.D., Executive Vice Chairman of the New York Presbyterian Board and President of the Foundation’s Scientific Council. The keynote is titled, “Are there Breakthrough Opportunities for Mental Health?” The full day symposium runs from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. More info.
